My fifteen year old daughter announced last week she was going vegan for a month. My partner and I were supportive. Then we thought, “What if we all went vegan this month?”And so the journey began.

But first and foremost we are frugal, we have values that include not wasting things, especially food, and especially food that involved the death of another creature, and we had meat in the fridge. Nothing worse than being killed for someone’s dinner and then thrown out. Unused. We gave ourselves a week to eat it all.

Last week the fridge contained: 12 eggs, 1/4 stick butter, couple pounds organic ground beef, 6 Chinese sausages, package of bacon, 2 packages of salami, and package of hotdogs. We did a terrible job trying to eat it all. There is still butter, bacon, hotdogs, sausages, and ground beef. Most went into the freezer for when, or if, we go non-vegan again. There is some cheese I will take to work.

Linda came over mid-week for an experimental use-up-the-meat-meal: beef curry with a fresh curry powder and homemade chickpea chapatis with gomae (a Japanese condiment that is essentially roasted sesame seeds and salt). It was delicious. I recommend adding the gomae or some kind of flavouring to the chapati recipe.

Two more creepy bunnies. Four more bodies & limbs assembled and waiting for faces & personality. Pickles, named by my five year old, was also made from the same lovely wool coat I made Bunny Wunny and Pourquoi Pas from. Lena helped me stitch the neck, which, for once, I left without covering it with matching fabric. The torso was made form a sleeve, the button and seam left for detail and texture.

Creep Bunny3, not yet named, made from Linda’s old fleece jacket that she donated to the cause. Pocket left intact and still usable.

I get some fucking weird spam comments: erection medication, mail order brides, loans. Probably because I’ve used the words nipple and vagina, but I’m not 100% sure.

Since making Michelle’s Bunny Wunny, I’ve been making more. They just seem to multiply. i finished two in the past couple days and have another 2 bodies ready to go, awaiting their faces. This first one I made for Artful Sundays, a small outdoor art show every Sunday throughout the summer that showcases local artists. It is to go in Britannia Library’s display case, so if you are on the Drive, head over there in sometime this summer and check him out. His name is Babs (Bad Ass Bunny) and those are the classic glittery silver letters we always ironed on our shirts in the 70’s.
This bunny makes me laugh and kind of creeps me out. On his belly I embroidered ” Pourquoi pas?” Why not? What’s on his chest? Some kind of decoration I guess. It looked plain and it needed something. I often applique a heart, like on Babs, whose heart has been torn and then mended, but it just didn’t seem right for this one.

Life is busy right now. My school is on the list of possible closures. We are saying goodbye to over ten staff members Wednesday and possibly more in August and early September. It’s hard to know what to do, what to think. The uncertainty is the worst. I am trying to dedicate more time to sewing without the guilt factor. On the other hand, life is busy with work and family. Here’s what I’ve been doing rather than sewing…

And this is what I made for six year old Sadie, who has been asking me for a mermaid for ages and ages and ages.
