dreams and studio day

Published by jen under dolls

Thanks to a supportive and encouraging family, I rode to the studio today, my pack stuffed with supplies. I began a papier mache doll that I keep dreaming about. It was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend at lunch last week. My friend is into fairy tales and story telling, and when […]

Eustacia: momma to be

Published by jen under Gina Doll, Jen, home

Eustacia, almost named Big Pink Momma and Bitchy Birdy, is one of three Gina Dolls I have sewn in the last week. Eustacia was looking a bit plain around the neck and chest, a little too unadorned for a doll who is made from angora & wool felt and is 2.5 feet long. Almost as […]

It has come to this

Published by jen under Gina Doll, Jen, creatures, dolls, home

I work 84.67% of a full time job leaving me with two, sometimes three precious little morsels of time to myself. Originally cleaved to spend more time with Bean, then continued so I could finish another year at UBC, now I fiercely guard this time so that I can make things.
But do I?
Recently I’ve been […]

back to it

Published by jen under Jen, creatures, dolls, home

It has been awhile since I have created, sewed or designed something (except in my head). Once drained by interpersonal challenges and well, work, my energy is back and I’m itching to create. First, I whipped off this little guy, so far nameless, perhaps Chad.Perhaps Chad was sewn from a thrift store sock with arms […]

What colour are nipples anyway?

Published by jen under Jen, dolls, home

I don’t know how observant you are, but I had a tough time figuring out what colour nipples are when I was selecting the embroidery thread for Old Man Hanson’s nipples.  Here are the finalists (please bear in mind OMH is an olive toned caucasian man, so please don’t be offended if your colours aren’t represented here):

Old Man Hanson

Published by jen under Jen, dolls, home

There’s been talk about whether or not I can make men dolls. I mean, you spend your whole girlhood drawing cute fashionistas with high heels and skin tight jeans, big hair and black leather purses, princesses and fairies… I don’t know how to draw men’s faces, but here’s my first attempt since life drawing classes […]

Creating Clio

Published by jen under Jen, dolls, home

After taking a doll making workshop this summer as part of the Gibson’s Fibre Arts Festival with Olwyn, I bastardized Cheryl’s Ginger Doll pattern and created Clio: Now I’m working on her outfit (thinking girlie and hippie) and a new version with a more 3-D head in 4 pieces rather than Clio’s 2.

Winter Work

Published by jen under Gina Doll, Jen, Mermaid, creatures, dolls

My latest favourite: Lady Saavedrat, a Gina Doll who births her baby Starrchild. We traded these dolls for a beautiful handmade silver ring. We love the ring, but we still miss the gals.

Finally Christmas is over, I’m off work and just beginning to relax and make some new things. I started this new wire doll […]

Olwyn and I are signed up for a two day doll making workshop in the Gibson’s Fibre Festival. I am very excited.
